I paid ~2k for a MBP back in 2008 when I started college, that was actually a pretty good purchase.

It’s crazy that the laptop I just bought for $150 vastly outstrips both of those in every measurable performance metric.

I mean, this was 11 years ago.

Same year I went to college with a Dell XPS Gen 2 Laptop . I think it was about $2400 after discounts. Yipes. Sorry mom and dad. But there was a winamp plugin to sync those lid LEDS and I got to have the same laptop as Samantha Carter in S targate .

I scavenged an old PCWorld magazine from my school’s library around 2007 that had an Acer ad featuring this bad boy front & center! Never thought I would actually see one in real life. Back then I was lusting after a sweet Apple iMcClusterfuck and I would be lying if I said I still didn’t yearn to visit T he House Steve (helped) Built .

The laptop I eventually bought for college a few years later was a ThinkPad T400, known for its keyboard, zero-flex chassis, and fold-flat display that made it a fantastic companion. It has just about outlasted every other tech device anyone I know has purchased from back then. Shame Win10 won’t play nice with its WiFi card any more.

Bought one of those too (early 2008 MBP)  - was still using it pretty actively until it died recently. I miss the matte screen terribly.

DAT FAN! those AMD Chips must have been super hot. I have a terrible old (c.2002)  HP Athlon that runs full speed most of the time and was too hot to touch after about 30 min of light use.

I had a Thinkpad R-series once that would report back 90C cpu temps after gaming for a bit.

I will only ever own Thinkpads. The one time I ever tried another bran d it was just a wful (some sort of 2010 era HP) and turned me off of getting anything else ever again.

I bought a refurb T420 and it lasted me a good 6 years before the MoBo  failed. Best laptop I ever owned, but the T440S I just bought may give it a run for its money.

I’ m still using a 2008 MBP to this day for both OSX and Win7. I really got my money's worth out of that thing, but I only paid about $5 for it at the Goodwill Outlet and then fixed the broken parts for about $50.

I didn’t have the computer, but I did have the matching 20" monitor. I got it for free, and just g ave it away recently.

Kinja'd!!!

A 20" monitor is just too small these days...

The quad core i7 in my Mac mini will hit 99c with the fan running flat out when transcoding video. Fortunately it’s pretty silent most other times. Apple isn’t exactly known for excellent thermal management.
